Graphitized petroleum coke appeared in China at the beginning of the 21st century. Although it is not a new product, it is one of the existing graphite materials, however, due to its simple production method and low production cost, the emergence of graphitized coke has expanded new markets and new uses.

Graphitized petroleum coke is a good recarburizer for smelting. In the steelmaking industry, it is necessary to produce good steel and have good raw materials, including good recarburizers, and graphitized petroleum coke is a good recarburizer. In the absence of graphitized petroleum coke, the scrap of graphite electrodes is relatively small and the price is high, which not only increases the cost of steelmaking, but also restricts the development of the steel industry. The emergence of graphitized petroleum coke breaks this bottleneck. In the past, in the domestic smelting industry, relatively low-end non-graphitized recarburizers were generally used. With the improvement of product quality and the need for upgrading, the domestic use of graphitized coke will increase. It is conservatively calculated that smelting steel at 0.05% graphitized coke, the annual consumption is 350,000 tons.
